Song of the week
Song of the week is Sailing to Philadelphia by Mark Knopfler, the guitarist and singer from Dire Straits. On this track Knopfler sings alongside James Taylor, although he is not credited or featured. It is a beautiful song about Jeremiah Dixon and Charlie Mason, two young men who left England to survey what was later named the Mason-Dixon Line. (I should say that while i love the song, i do not love colonisation.) The song is not really about surveying though; it’s about two people leaving their small towns on “the coaly Tyne” and becoming a part of history. It is about taking control of your future. This comes through in the melody, rolling acoustic guitar and Knopfler’s restrained but flourishing, two and a half minute guitar solo. Click the cover to listen to the song on spotify.
